About the Moynihan Prize

The Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize was created in 2007 to honor one of the AAPSS's distinguished fellows, the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Senator Moynihan had a uniquely substantial influence over social policy and social science in the twentieth century, and this eponymous prize recognizes social scientists, public officials, and civic leaders who carry on his legacy of using informed judgment to advance the public good.

The American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) awards the Moynihan Prize each year to a scholar, public servant, or civic leader whose work carries on the late senator’s legacy of using social science research to influence and improve public policy. Since its inception in 2007, the prize has recognized an extraordinarily diverse group of honorees across the academic and political spectrums, all of whom share one universal credential: Each, like Moynihan, has been part of making the world better.

In 2013, the AAPSS began hosting an annual public lecture given by that year’s winner on a topic of their choosing. Delivered in Washington, DC, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Lecture on Social Science and Public Policy is an opportunity for some of the nation’s most influential public intellectuals to speak out about the world’s pressing challenges.
